History of Hammonds TransportationHow surprised the principal of Bracebridge High School would be if he could see the results of his 1944 meeting with a 14 year old boy and his parents. He advised the Hammonds that Orvil should quit school and go to work; and go to work he did! Orvil Hammond began his career driving a taxi, but within a year had purchased a 1938 Ford sedan and went into business for himself. In 1946 he was joined by his father to form "Hammond's Taxi."Soon Orvil began carrying students with a panel van equipped with side seats. As Orvil's company grew and added trucking and ambulance businesses the enterprise was renamed Hammond Transportation Ltd. By the mid 1970's Orvil's business again changed through a series of transactions which saw the taxi, ambulance and trucking divisions sold. Hammond Transportation expanded its area of operations and late in the 1970's a travel agency, Muskoka Travel Service, was added to complement the charter operations of the business. As the business grew so did Orv's family. Sons, Jim and Greg are active in the business, and wife Fran escorts tours and lends a hand where needed. The 1990's have seen Jim's sons helping out too - representing the fourth generation involved in the family business!!

1948Over fifty years after the principal told Orvil Hammond to "go to work" Hammond Transportations' operations include school bus, charter bus, and tour services. With a fleet of over 100 units serving the Muskoka, Parry Sound, North Simcoe, Haliburton and Algonquin Park areas the bus company operates from coast to coast in Canada and throughout much of the United States, while Muskoka Travel Service has operated tours as far afield as Europe and Australia.
